Abstract

This paper aims to explore the drivers and challenges of sustainability adoption among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Sustainability has become a critical focus in the business realm, driven by heightened awareness of environmental issues, regulatory pressures, and evolving consumer preferences. SMEs play a crucial role in this transition due to their significant contributions to the global economy. By adopting sustainable practices, SMEs can enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and improve their brand reputation, making them more attractive to environmentally conscious consumers and investors. Key drivers for sustainability adoption among SMEs include regulatory requirements, market demand, competitive advantage, and access to funding. However, SMEs face significant challenges such as financial constraints, lack of expertise, and limited access to resources, which hinder their ability to implement sustainable practices effectively. To address these challenges, it is crucial to implement educational programs, including workshops, online courses, and consultancy services, to equip SME leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge. Additionally, establishing networks and platforms for resource sharing and fostering collaborations with larger corporations can provide SMEs with access to advanced technologies and innovative solutions. The study employs a systematic literature review, utilizing tools like PoP (Publish or Perish) and VOS Viewer, to provide valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners. The findings underscore the importance of targeted support and resources to help SMEs overcome barriers, ensuring they can contribute effectively to broader environmental goals and benefit from sustainable practices in a dynamic business landscape.
